Binsar

The sleepy region of Binsar is one of the scenic places of Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. Perched at an elevation of 2420 metres, Binsar is known for offering spell-binding views of the majestic Himalayan peaks such as Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot, Panchachuli, and Kedarnath. The main attraction of Binsar is the 300 kms of majestic and panoramic view of Himalayan peaks from Zero point.

This compact hill town is encircled by the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary which serves as a habitat for the rare animals, birds and flower species. Since the place is wrapped up in thick foliage, it is undoubtedly the best place for experiencing adventurous hiking, camping and nature walks.

Hiking: Situated at an elevation of 2,400 meters, Binsar offers myriad nature walks and walking trails that lead to even more secluded places in the vicinity. Hike to Zero Point, which offer 300-degree view of the snow clad Himalayas is definitely worth your time. Enjoy walking a lot the oak forests with your friends and family.

Bird Watching: With over 200 aviary species, Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary is nothing but a paradise for the bird enthusiasts. There are innumerable varieties of birds, both resident and migratory, that are a delight to watch, observe and capture with a camera.

Heritage Tourism: Apart from the various revered shrines in the region, Binsar is also known for some amazing archeological sites. The Binsar Sanctuary Museum educates the tourists about the cultural history of the region. Also, there are some stone sculptures from Megalithic Age.

Travel Tips of Binsar

Though Binsar is a place which can be visited anytime of the year, ideal time to visit the region is from April to June and again from September to November.
If one wants to witness crystal clear Himalayan views, December and February is the best time to visit the region.
If possible, avoid trekking in the monsoons season. The route is slippery and the region is prone to unexpected landslides and road blocks.
If travelling in peak season, finding a place to stay could be little difficult in Binsar, as they have only handful of accommodations. Best bet will be to stay in Almora (33 km) and excurse to Binsar.

Mythology about Binsar

The name Binsar has been derived from the words 'bin-sar' which literally suggests without a head. There is a famous local legend which states that once a fierce battle held between the King of Binsar and Golu Devta, the local deity. But due to some scepticism, Golu Devta was beheaded and his trunk fell at Gairad Dana Golu near Binsar National Park and his head at Kaparkahan near Binsar. Both these places have the ancient temples of Golu Devta.
